A series looking at 5 key points from a non-English language article / press release –
On 9th May, Victory Day, the DPR released a press statement, accompanied by photos, of ice cream being handed out on Victory Day.
1. With Donetsk plunging back into a war situation, with Ukrainian shelling beginning again in anger, casualties and fatalities once more, efforts are being made to do small, but significant, things to lift the spirits of people.
3. The action, taking place in Donetsk, Makievka, and notably Gorlovka, shows a reaching out to places difficult to do so before NAF taking of Ukrainian positions in January of 2015 opened up access.
4. Many people have never left the 17,000 sq km2 of Donbass in NAF control, many have returned, shown by huge crowds at Victory Day marches across the region, and a high turnout for this ice cream handout.
5. A slice of normal life, and normal people in the DPR, contrasts with continual western media depiction of ‘separatism’ and ‘terrorism’ in the seceded territories of the former Ukraine. It even compares favourably with recent scenes of military vehicles on the streets of Ukraine.
