A Graham Newsletter (#25) East of Ukraine Nostalgia, Crimea, Latvia, DPR Tourism

It’s been both a week of intense activity in Donbass – from the first coal, and not only, trading with Russia, new DPR-designed roadheaders (I’ve been covering that all on my Twitter), and, sadly, continued Ukrainian shelling (see Patrick Lancaster, on the scene, for full coverage of that).

Also, I can say it’s been a week of some nostalgia for myself, as this week, 3 years ago, I’d set off from Odessa to see the situation in the east of Ukraine, as it was then, for myself. Driving, sleeping in the car for a few hours many nights to save time, covering as much ground as possible and, for my own embryonic YouTube channel as it was, filming reportage of things, just as they were! This week I did a few pull-togethers of reportage, here on the Truth Speaker, of things as they were –

Click here for full reportage, Donetsk, March 12th, 2014, here’s a couple:

From Kharkov, March 14th:

And, of course, Crimea, March 16th:

Of course, looking back to Latvia, from 2016, it’s a difference form of ‘nostalgia’ – I’d gone to spend a month reporting from Latvia, yet on the 3rd day, the authorities objected to my coverage of the march there honouring Nazism, deported me, banned for 3 years.

Here is my reportage from that day, March 16th, 2016 –

They then pursued me with various letters describing my ‘misdemenours’ (in Latvian, so I really had no idea what they were saying), culminating in an 8-page document, which, after listing all my supposed wrong-doings (I asked people at a march honouring Nazism why they were doing that), then said they wanted 150 Euros from me!

Things all got a bit surreal on March 16th itself, when Ukrainian media, and not only, wrote the story of my being detained, and deported, at the Waffen SS veteran march, as if it had been March 16th, 2017 rather than 2016!  Groundhog Day…

This led to my receiving a lot of worried messages, and my own wondering if this was Latvia’s latest attempt for 150 Euros from me!

As it was, I was far away from Latvia. And indeed, being a tourist – in London, no less, and here I present you with my latest reportage from there, as a ‘DPR tourist’, no less, featuring a couple of special guests!

There’s a bit more to come from the UK, not only London, and then, I’ll be on the road back to Donbass, via some interesting places en route!

Once more, a massive thanks to all of you who support my work, and make all kinds of reportage possible, in all kinds of places! The main thing is, it’s always independent, objective, and completely crowdfunded! To be a part, click here –

And don’t worry, none of your support goes towards propping up the Latvian economy 😉

Look out for lots more to come soon! Best for now!

Women’s Day, Reportage from an Unexpected Place – and A To-Do List (before leaving London)

Graham Phillips

For the weekend, I’m looking forward to bringing you special reportage about what Women’s Day means in London, having already been pleased to bring you reportage from the WASPI demo.

In the week, there’s going to be reportage from an unexpected place.

And then, preparing to leave London to return to report in Donbass, via many places, and much reportage across Europe, more, and Russia, there’s a to-do list of things to get to in London prior to departure, so join me as I work through that list.

As ever, all my work is thanks to your support, being completely crowdfunded, independent. If you’d like to be involved in making it all happen – click here.

Ukraine targets Journalists (again), as the west just looks on (again)

Graham Phillips

In Ukraine, ‘radicals’ have published the latest issue of playing cards issued to Ukrainian soldiers with ‘kill targets’ on them. But don’t be fooled by ‘radicals’, be sure the Ukrainian government have given their full support to this, and the cards will be issued to Ukrainian soldiers, as previously (see my photos here of cards, after Ukrainian forces retreated from Lugansk airport, September 2014) –

Here they are:

As well as myself, a UK freelance journalist, being on there, there are several other journalists, including prominent Russian journalist Dmitry Steshin.

So, where’s the outrage over this from the west? The headlines blasting Ukraine Targets Journalists…. where’s the outrage from western governments??

Nowhere at all. Remember, this is Ukraine and the west will blindly support Ukraine, because it’s a really convenient country to use to have a go at Russia.

A Graham Newsletter (#9) Wrapping up Germany, and onto a Brit in Crimea

I enjoyed my recent reportage in Germany, of which you can read all about here –

https://thetruthspeaker.co/2016/08/12/notes-on-my-recent-trip-to-germany/

Actually the main aim was to film for my MH17 documentary – which I’m aiming to be ready for mid-2017. However, it’s an interesting place, and time, to film other reportage, which has been translated into 3 languages – English, German, and Russian – and in future, I’ll be aiming to do as much tri-language reportage as possible!

Now, as for MH17, work on that goes on, and I’ll soon be making a call for open source information on this. And, I mean real open source information, in that I Eliotwant your information. Rather than the Bellingcat version, which is that they’ve already come to the conclusions, and want something to match it. But, as I’ve written here, I don’t want things to get bogged down in personalities with Eliot Higgins.

In recent times, as I actually spend likely my final time of this year in London, I’ve been watching a lot of aviation disaster documentaries. In the documentary I’ll be making, with your help, I’d like to look at MH17 on its own, but also compare to other crashes, to give a broader context.

My time back in the UK has been very enjoyable, and productive. Perhaps you recall this video, from beautiful Broadstairs, about my plan to find a British person to take on holiday to Crimea, and make a film about it, via crowdfunding –

Well, I’m delighted to say, I’ve found that person, and off we set for Crimea the day after tomorrow! The crowdfunding project for that is half-funded now, contributions hugely appreciated, to make this unique film happen –

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/new-film-a-brit-in-crimea-on-his-holidays-russia/x/12236308

So more on that soon!

My plan is to make that Crimea film, then return to Donbass in, likely late, September. In Donbass, I’ll work on MH17, as well as doing general reportage from Donbass. But, there’s no need to interpret that as ‘war reportage’, let’s hope Graham PhillipsI can cover positive events from Donbass. As ever, I’ll cover what there is to cover.

My time back in the UK has been hugely enjoyable, and productive. I’ve spent time with friends, family, visited different parts of the country, and just enjoyed being back in my own country. More, speaking to people here has made me much better understand how Donbass, Crimea, are perceived, and what I need to do to break through the information barrier.

It’s been very informative hearing what people here think about Russia, and why, for example –

Graham and BenSo I set off back over a lot better informed, with a significant new, valued audience from the UK, and across Europe I’m looking forward to providing with reports from Crimea, Donbass, and more.

Before that, this evening, I’m delighted to present my new documentary, about my day with former British Donbass militia member Ben Stimson – coming up soon!

Meanwhile, the very best for now, and on we go!

Graham’s Brexit Reportage Wrap-up – The 10 Key Facts

Graham Phillips

So, it’s all over, and here are the 10 key facts about my Brexit reportage project!

1. It was completely crowdfunded, via a campaign here on Indiegogo!

2. The project took just over a month, all inclusive, starting on the 12th June, here in Calais, France –

Finishing up here, Billingsgate Market, on July 13th –

3. In total, the Brexit reportage project videos – over 80 in total – got over a million hits – on my channel alone!

4. The Brexit reportage made 2 major news storiesin the Daily Express, and Breibart.

5. There were three videos to get over one hundred thousand hits apiece, these were –

Almost 450,000 hits on this as I spoke to Ukrainian fans in France. Not everyone connects that a country working closely with the EU is in the throes of a bloody civil war, I wanted to shed light on this –

Hollie, this anti-Brexit protester, has almost 200,000 hits, though I didn’t encourage many of the negative comments in her direction

This video of an altercation at an anti-Brexit demo, March for Europe, is well over 130,000 hits now –

6. The Brexit reportage project brought you reportage from 4 countries – France, Latvia, Denmark and the United Kingdom. Here, Latvia –

And Denmark –

7. The Brexit reportage has been watched in over 200 countries – 217 to be precise, with the UK the most popular –

However the reportage was also watched in São Tomé and Príncipe, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. Although true, just the one second there 🙂

8. Funding for the project came from 13 countries, the number 1 – South Africa!

9. For this reportage project, I travelled some 8000km, including a trip to Scotland! The plan was to show some more unknown parts of the EU, then come back to the UK –

10. Finally, this project was a complete success – meeting all the goals set out! And it was entirely because of those people who chose to back this, via Crowdfunding, making real, independent journalism possible.

I’ll be contacting everyone who got involved in this project, and fulfilling, hopefully exceeding even, all the pledges made to you! Once more – thanks again, you made something wonderful happen!
