The Role of a Journalist: To Go To Where there is the Most Disinformation – or No Information

I recently released this video, from Crimea, where I’m reporting from just now:

And I’ve written more about Crimea, one of the world’s hotspots of disinformation, here on the Truth Speaker –

https://thetruthspeaker.co/2017/09/10/graham-and-crimea-the-story-the-work/

And that’s why I’m in Crimea, because I believe it’s the role of a journalist to go to where there’s no information, or misinformation. Here, I must mention the US journalist Christopher Allen, recently killed while reporting from Sudan.

https://thetruthspeaker.co/2017/09/07/christopher-allen-kia-a-journalist-is-a-journalist/

I will also mention the journalist Kim Wall here, tragically killed in August, by Danish inventor Peter Madson, as she reported from his homemade submarine, Nautilus. This, moving tribute to Kim, here.

Here, my recently completed documentary from a place you’ve most likely never heard of, but with some real significance – Belval –

Belval was a place to go for me because of a deficit of any information from there. A place from which there is plenty of information is North Korea. But, how much of it is disinformation?

I’m pleased to announce I’ve just completed an exclusive interview with the makers of North Korea documentary, The Haircut:

And that’s the role of a true journalist, to go to where there’s no information, or misinformation!

Coming soon on the Truth Speaker!

A Graham Newsletter (#34) A Message from Donbass, and On to Russia!!

My last newsletter had me feeling a bit of pressure in, and from the UK:

https://thetruthspeaker.co/2017/07/26/a-graham-newsletter-33-pressure-in-the-uk-ukraine-and-leaving-the-uk/

So, it was nice to be able to cool off a bit here in Donbass, and record this messsage for you:

For my countrymen in the UK, not only: Don’t Believe the UK Government Lies, come to Donbass

On the way to Donbass, I was delighted to finish filming of my documentary about the town of Belval, in Luxembourg, which I’m just finishing the edit for now.

I was happy to do an interview there with former West Ham legend, Sebastien Schemmel. And incidentally, something those in the BBC or wherever attacking me will never say, is that – did you know that a surprising amount of my work has nothing to do with Russia, or Donbass?

That said, of course a significant part of my work is from Donbass, Russia, and always will be – and I’ve written about why that is, here. And here, about covering all sides, in my reportage from Donbass – as well as moving onto a new project.

Here, a video from School 60 in Lugansk’s graduation ceremony:

Here, Yasinovataya’s machine engineering plant –

To touch briefly on personal life, in my time in the LPR I’ve been pleased to announce my engagement to a beautiful young lady from Lugansk, Yulia, and to congratulate Patrick Lancaster on his own recent wedding!

3 1/2 years covering Donbass, and for a few reasons, it’s time to move on. What can be referred to as ‘low intensity’ warfare, goes on. There’s some shelling on the frontiers, some battle on the frontlines – and to be honest, with a few notable, tragic flare-ups, it’s been like that for over 2 years now.

Such news as there is from Donbass, is covered by journalists here, including Patrick Lancaster Graham Phillipsand others. I feel both that my contribution is more needed elsewhere, and also, I’m also in the mood for a new challenge. And there there is intense information war, there’s an opportunity to go and report the truth. Where’s the information war waging fiercest? Russia, and I’ve written of that here –

https://thetruthspeaker.co/2017/08/11/world-cup-2018-information-war-against-russia-game-on/

And that’s my project for the next year, as the western world attacks Russia, to travel all over Russia, filming you the truth about how Russia really is, for a series called ‘Real Russia’.

https://thetruthspeaker.co/2017/08/11/my-project-for-the-next-year-russia/

It’s going to be a massive project, and you’ll hear more about it soon! As with all my work, it’ll be 100% crowdfunded, 100% independent.

This below isn’t a taster of that project, but, I have been getting in and about the minutae of Russian life, here, at the hot end of Russian bathhouse culture, for a series called War Gonzo –

For now, a new video from Donbass, as the Night Wolves pass through on their way to Crimea:

And my documentary from Luxembourg, Belval, will be up very soon!

If you wish to support my work, there’s always here – https://www.paypal.me/grahamwphillips

And as ever, huge thanks for being with me!!!

My Next Documentary Reportage: Belval – Jean Claude Juncker Town

What is Belval?

The chances are you’ve never heard of it, but it exists. It’s in the south of Luxembourg, and it’s the brainchild, pet project of president of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, even.

It’s a billion Euro plus project to turn a mostly disused steelmill, into a futuristic hub of science, music, and modern living space.

But, some have been less than kind. Some have even called it a ‘white elephant’.

So, what’s the truth about Belval? I went there, and spent a week there to film special documentary reportage. Coming soon on my YouTube channel!

‘Sex Blogger’ Graham Phillips, and the Urban Environment…

I often read in Ukrainian, western media etc, that I was some sort of a ‘sex blogger’ etc before the Ukraine crisis. Well, I did indeed write about that theme sometimes, and why not? But no less, I wrote about a real interest of mine, urban environments. Especially ones with interesting stories, problems even.

So, look out for the announcement soon of my next project, on the road in Europe, connected to that theme.

Love Europe, not the EU

I recently filmed reportage at the March for Europe in London, prompting a few messages from some asking why I was ‘promoting’ a pro-EU event. Well, my own politics have always been clear on this matter – I don’t support, or even like, the EU, for any number of reasons.

However, when filming reportage, I always try to stay objective, and the answers of those I interviewed speak for themselves:

One common thread was the seeming belief among demonstrators, that the UK was physically leaving Europe. Somehow being uprooted, and put down elsewhere. And more, in almost every respondent, a conflation of the EU, and Europe – i.e. they love Europe, so they love the EU. |

Well, I love Europe – it’s a fascinating place to film reportage, and you’d struggle to find someone who’s traversed Europe more often than myself (obligatory Euro-selfie, right, Czech, 2011). But, the EU? That bloated, bureacratic monolith, led by a problem drinker and a man whose own country despise him?  What’s to love?

Europe though, I’m here, excited to be here, and looking forward to bringing you interesting reportage on my travels! Remainers do not have the monopoly on ‘loving Europe’, by the way, as much as they may tell you otherwise!

My UK Reportage: A Wrap-up!

As  prepare to leave – it’s been an enormously busy last 2 months in the UK, working on the edits of documentary projects, dozens of articles here on the Truth Speaker, and video reportage. There will be one more report to come from the UK, part 2 of this special reportage on the recent terrorist attack in London –

To recap, here was January when I visited the UK parliament to ask at a UK/Ukraine event if they would be mentioning Ukrainian shelling civilian areas of Donbass:

The introduction to my documentary about the murder of Barry Pring

My coverage of the anti-Trump protests in London at the start of February –

A few days later, and I try to go to a Ukrainian event in London –

And here, I succeed in getting into a Ukrainian propaganda event at the LSE!

The end of February here, and I visit the Ukrainain Embassy in London –

March, and a look at what Women’s Day means in London!

Then, my day as a DPR tourist in London!

Masses of reportage from the March for Europe on March 25th –

And even a trip to Scotland to bring you the reality there of how people feel about a proposed new referendum!

It’s overall achieved hundreds of thousands of views, on my channel alone, coverage in mass media – and much more! I’m a completely crowdfunded journalist, and none of this would have been possible without your support. To be involved, click here!

Thanks again, and on we go!!

A Graham Newsletter (#25) East of Ukraine Nostalgia, Crimea, Latvia, DPR Tourism

It’s been both a week of intense activity in Donbass – from the first coal, and not only, trading with Russia, new DPR-designed roadheaders (I’ve been covering that all on my Twitter), and, sadly, continued Ukrainian shelling (see Patrick Lancaster, on the scene, for full coverage of that).

Also, I can say it’s been a week of some nostalgia for myself, as this week, 3 years ago, I’d set off from Odessa to see the situation in the east of Ukraine, as it was then, for myself. Driving, sleeping in the car for a few hours many nights to save time, covering as much ground as possible and, for my own embryonic YouTube channel as it was, filming reportage of things, just as they were! This week I did a few pull-togethers of reportage, here on the Truth Speaker, of things as they were –

Click here for full reportage, Donetsk, March 12th, 2014, here’s a couple:

From Kharkov, March 14th:

And, of course, Crimea, March 16th:

Of course, looking back to Latvia, from 2016, it’s a difference form of ‘nostalgia’ – I’d gone to spend a month reporting from Latvia, yet on the 3rd day, the authorities objected to my coverage of the march there honouring Nazism, deported me, banned for 3 years.

Here is my reportage from that day, March 16th, 2016 –

They then pursued me with various letters describing my ‘misdemenours’ (in Latvian, so I really had no idea what they were saying), culminating in an 8-page document, which, after listing all my supposed wrong-doings (I asked people at a march honouring Nazism why they were doing that), then said they wanted 150 Euros from me!

Things all got a bit surreal on March 16th itself, when Ukrainian media, and not only, wrote the story of my being detained, and deported, at the Waffen SS veteran march, as if it had been March 16th, 2017 rather than 2016!  Groundhog Day…

This led to my receiving a lot of worried messages, and my own wondering if this was Latvia’s latest attempt for 150 Euros from me!

As it was, I was far away from Latvia. And indeed, being a tourist – in London, no less, and here I present you with my latest reportage from there, as a ‘DPR tourist’, no less, featuring a couple of special guests!

There’s a bit more to come from the UK, not only London, and then, I’ll be on the road back to Donbass, via some interesting places en route!

Once more, a massive thanks to all of you who support my work, and make all kinds of reportage possible, in all kinds of places! The main thing is, it’s always independent, objective, and completely crowdfunded! To be a part, click here –
